This year’s traditional Budapest Wagner Days, and within this presentation of The Ring of the Nibelung, is once again being staged in the Palace of Arts in the first half of June. Regarding its birth, Siegfried was fated to face the greatest vicissitudes of the Ring of the Nibelung tetralogy.

Twelve years separated the completion of the second act and the outlining of the third. Bavarian king Ludwig II provided generous support to Wagner as patron, which allowed the composer to complete the Ring cycle and initiate the construction of the Bayreuth opera house that is still today the centre of the Wagnerian cult. American Stephen Gould debuts in Budapest in 2010. He took to the stage in the title role of Siegfried at the Vienna Staatsoper in November 2009; other artists in the Budapest performance – Michael Roider, Tomasz Konieczny and Walter Fink – are similarly members of the Staatsoper. Swedish singer Irene Theorin plays Brynhildr, awakened from her slumbers; she first appeared at Bayreuth in 2000, and she returned in the role of Isolda in 2008.
