The “native tongue” spoken by the world-renowned Honvéd Dance Theatre led by Zoltán Zsuráfszky is the folk dance treasury of the Carpathian Basin. The company’s repertoire has been built on this extraordinarily rich material, from large-scale dance dramas to rustic comedies, from classical tragedies to fairy tales. In the dance drama Captain of Tenkes one of the most popular Hungarian film series of the 1960s is reborn on stage in musical and dance form.
Working from the film’s screenplay the Honvéd Dance Theatre production revives the legendary figures, music and tales of the Kuruc period (late 17th, early 18th century). The work brings to mind historical traditions with the help of the extremely rich Hungarian folk dance and music heritage.
Music composer of this production packed with virtuoso dances is Ferenc Sebő; choreographer-director is Zoltán Zsuráfszky, who coordinates the nearly 50 dancers and accompanying musicians as well as vocal soloists of the Honvéd Male Choir who play in this grandiose production.
