Other voices, other rooms – Attempt(s) at reconstruction
50 Years of the Balázs Béla Studio - No intellectual or artist in the 1980s and 1990s could ignore the Béla Balázs Stúdió (BBS). There is, however, a generation now coming of age that knows nothing about BBS, and does not even suspect that it was a centre of filmmaking unparalleled in the world.
271 directors, 50 years, 511 films – this was the BBS in numbers. But no figures can reveal that artistic and intellectual openness that distinguished the Studio. With a few exceptions, almost all directors of modern Hungarian cinema started their career in BBS, among them István Szabó, Sándor Sára, Judit Elek, Gyula Gazdag, Zoltán Huszárik, Béla Tarr, Ildikó Enyedi and Gábor Bódy.
This ambitious exhibition on the past fifty years of the BBS will help younger generations to have a sense of the age, the context, in which these films were made, and offer those contemporaries who are familiar with the Studio an opportunity to remember, relive and reread.
